Our skin is the largest organ of our body and affects our overall appearance the most. It protects us from the environment, wards off disease, maintains our body temperature, regulates our body moisture, excretes waste matter, is able to assimilate some materials directly into the body, and provides tactile - or sensory feedback information - to our brain. With a list of duties this important - and many more that are less obvious but just as important - it is imperative that we care for our skin like our lives depended upon it. Because it does.
That part of the skin you can see is called the epidermis. The epidermis protects the more delicate, inner layers and is made of several layers of cells. The bottom layer of the epidermis is where new epidermal cells are made. As older, dead skin cells are discarded from the surface of our skin… newer cells are pushed up to replace them. The epidermis also carries the pigment that gives our skin its color - melanin. This basic fact is one of the principals that diamond peel microdermabrasion is based upon.
Beneath the epidermis is the dermis. The dermis is made of elastic fibers called Elastin that provide suppleness - and protein fibers called collagen, that give strength and "body." The dermis layer also contains sweat glands, sebaceous glands, hair follicles, blood vessels, and nerves.
Many skin treatments through our Newport Beach and Beverly Hills skin care practices use techniques that coach the new cell growth mechanisms of our body to produce new skin cells faster. When you have your first consultation with Newport Skin Care - we will explain how this works and some of the strategies we employ to improve your overall appearance, treat some skin conditions, slow or stop the aging process, and rejuvenate your skin back to a more youthful looking you.
