Many women come to our Beverly Hills and Newport Beach practice for spider vein removal. Technically known as sunburst varicosities, these small, thin veins lie close to the surface of the skin and are connected to - but not an essential part of - the larger venous system.
Factors that contribute to the development of spider veins include heredity, weight gain, pregnancy, certain types of hormonal changes, some medications, and occupational environments in which the patient either sits or stands for long periods of time on an ongoing basis.
It is important to note that spider veins are not varicose veins. Varicose veins are much larger, darker, more likely to cause discomfort, and possibly related to a more serious vein disorder. Spider veins are rarely painful and not usually related to disease. Spider veins are one of life's indicators that the individual has a few years on them and their body has been through one or more types of extended stress in the past.
Spider veins come in a variety of patterns - the most common 3 being the starburst type… like a spider with a dark center and small tendrils radiating outward, a vine or arbor type in which the veins have branch like shapes not unlike vines or ivy that you see climbing walls, and simple, individual lines type of spider veins.
Spider veins are most commonly treated with a procedure called sclerotherapy. Although sclerotherapy has been used overseas for more than 50 years, it has only become popular in the US since the early 1990's. In this procedure, an extremely tiny needle is used to inject a special solution - called a "sclerosing" solution - directly into the affected area. This solution causes the veins to collapse - disbursing any blood into the tissue around them - where it is absorbed and carried off by the body. In a nominal period of time, the spider veins fade from view.
