Your skin ages gradually. Our Newport Beach and Beverly Hills patients have regular checkups to help spot early signs that the aging skin process has begun. This allows us, and you, to begin preventative treatments before too much skin damage has occurred.
Our skin ages from the outside in and from the inside out.
From the outside in - environmental factors such as sun, smoking, and other carcinogens build up over an extended period of time. Early detection can alert you to habits or environmental exposure that might otherwise go unnoticed. Educating you about proper skin care - and establishing a program of cleansing and moisturizing is an important part of the patient care we provide to our clients from all along the coastal areas of Orange County up to Hollywood and Los Angeles.
From the inside out - heredity, skin type, eating habits, and general lifestyle can have an enormous impact on the health and beauty of your skin. While we can't stop the effects of heredity - the inevitable can definitely be postponed by an examination of your background and an established regimen of nutritional supplements to offset genetically programmed skin deterioration. Knowing your skin type helps establish an appropriate pattern of skin care while poor eating habits and environmental conditions can be proactively adjusted by willpower and conscious avoidance.
There are many things you can do to preserve your skin and maintain a young, healthy appearance:
- Eat right
- Foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, contain antioxidants that help reduce sun damage and fight some types of cancer - including skin cancer. For long lasting young, healthy skin - observe the food pyramid and make sure you get your 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
- Remove makeup at night
- Even though it makes your skin pretty, some makeup can really clog your pores. Before turning in at night, wash your face gently with a mild and preferably "non soap" cleanser. Broadly speaking, most soap - however "mild" - has a tendency to dry your skin. Better to use a gentle moisturizer before hitting the pillow.
- Be careful with what you put against your face and in or near your mouth
- This can include the phone, especially public phones that chafe and spread disease. Be aware of how you hold the phone and how it contacts your skin and mouth area. Avoid using drinking glasses that you aren't sure of. Is that your toothbrush? Do you swig directly from the bottle of Listerine? If so - who else does? Don't take a disease free face for granted! Be proactive and protect it aggressively.
- Don't pop those pimples!
- You are not going to make them go away any sooner. In fact, you're more likely to spread the infection and prolong the discomfort, redness, and swelling. Wash the area and then apply a warm compress. The infected core or grain of pus will eventually come out on its own schedule. After the compress - apply a bacterial agent like Neosporin and then, if you have any, a good hydrocortisone cream. Just a tiny amount will speed healing and improve appearance.
- Get plenty of sleep
- Most of us in the workplace (and that includes busy "at home Moms"), don't get enough sleep. Rest when you can - preferably in a shaded area. The sleep lets all those facial muscles relax and release the tightened skin and furrows that eventually create deeper wrinkles. There really is such a thing as beauty sleep.
- Stay hydrated
- Drink plenty of water to keep your skin looking young and healthy. The "8 x 8" rule is only a recommendation. If you exercise and use low calorie sugar substitutes, you should be drinking more than the recommended 8 eight ounce glasses of water per day.
- Exercise, exercise, exercise
- Thirty to sixty minutes of daily aerobic exercise will not only keep those parts of us flat that we want to keep flat - it will also pump up your circulation, expand your capillary network (thereby putting less stress on a lesser vascular system), improve your energy, distribute nutrients more effectively to all parts of your body - including your skin - and give you a healthy looking glow that doesn't go unnoticed.
- Coordinate the skin care products you use
- With all of the alpha hydroxy acids, salicylic acids, retinoids, and antioxidants in the market place, it is easy to over scrub your skin and irritate the surface with too much exfoliation. Find a line of skin care products that is matched to each preparation and going to work best for your skin - and stick with it. Ask your skin care doctor to recommend a line that's best for you.
- Have regular checkups
- Around Newport Beach and anywhere along the coast of southern California, we have an overabundance of sun and light colored sand to reflect sunlight onto our bodies when we go to the beach. While a tan might make you look healthy, too much of it is bad for your skin. With all this exposure, it's wise to have an annual checkup by your dermatologist. Even those under 40 can develop skin cancers that will become serious if left unnoticed and / or untreated. Along with your skin health checkup, your skin care professional will spot signs of aging and general deterioration that you might not notice for many years after their onset. Often, in skincare, early diagnosis and treatment can extend the life of your skin and keep you young and beautiful looking well past middle age.
